Doolin rode back to the stream and pulled up to where he had camped the night before. He needed to make a plan, couldn’t get the sight of that woman out of his mind and was almost pain-free as he lit a fire to make coffee. “After I take that woman I’ll take more of that ointment,” he almost chuckled.

Because of the doctoring, Doolin got his first full night’s sleep since being wounded and came out of his bedroll just as the sun spread its warmth across the wide valley. He worked his shoulders about, found it still painful but not as bad as the day before, and got a good fire going. “I want that woman,” he muttered, “and I want that big man dead. Can’t ride in while it’s light but, tonight, I’ll have her.”

The man was on a desperate run for freedom and showed just how stupid he was, thinking of this attractive woman instead of getting away from what he knew was a sure posse following. Was it simply a lack of intelligence? Surely an intelligent man would know he was being chased, so it was probably simple stupidity. An ignorant man can learn, a stupid man won’t, and Doolin had better things to think about, such as, Beverly and killing Anderson.

He needed to know the lay of the land and rode out of camp within the hour. He rode wide of the house and made a full circle of the property before coming back to his camp. There were numerous deep ditches and arroyos, great stands of pine on the foothills, and indications of bunches of cattle being driven by one rider.

The hot summer day was coming to an end and thunderheads could be seen building over the mountains to the west as he rode into his camp. He’d been lucky in this run for freedom so far. Thunderstorms had been seen but hadn’t hit where he was. This time would be different, he knew, watching the massive clouds roll over the broad plain of the valley.

Flashes of lightning and rumbling thunder filled the air, and a cooling breeze drifted across the valley. Soon rain will fall, and the desert will be filled with the sweet aroma of damp sage and desert dust.

“Sweet Beverly, you will be mine tonight,” he said, getting a fire started. I’ll eat, sleep for a bit, and sneak in to kill that big man before I make you mine.”
